the sky

How often do you look at the sky?

I once thought the sky was just a thing, just like a mountain is a thing, or a chair, or this piece of paper. But unlike most other things, the sky is too far away to touch, so it was not something that was particularly important in my life. To me, it was just the blue empty space when you look up. I didn’t live in the sky, I lived on the earth.

But the sun lives in the sky, and so does the moon. So do the wind, the clouds, and the birds. They all need the sky. It is incredible how something like the sky can be so empty, and at the same time be so full.

I tried to imagine a world without the sky. To live all the days of your life in a box with no windows, or under the earth. To live in a world without the sky. And because there would be no sky, there would be no sunlight, rain, or wind. Just walls. To always have walls around you. To never know a sunny day or a rainy day – to always feel every day around you is the same day. To always be separated from the world outside. To never be free. Can you imagine living in such a world? I think I might go crazy. I wouldn’t know how to live. Maybe I would even want to die.

And that’s when I discovered, I need the sky, too. Yes, I need the sky, just like the sun, the moon, the clouds, and the birds need the sky. And like the birds, I need the sky to be free, and to live the way I want to live. If there were no sky, I could not have the life that I have now –and neither could you. I need the sky to be me. And because I need the sky to be me, I am connected to the sky - the sky is a part of my life, and a part of me. And that’s when I also realized, maybe there are many other things I don’t realize that I’m connected to - like the sun, the moon, the clouds, and the birds. Maybe I need these other things, too.

So when I look at the sky I never feel alone. As long as the sky is there, I know I am here, too. Every day is a beautiful day to be with the sky, because the sky reminds me that I am still alive. When I’m feeling down, I need only look up to see the sky and I am lifted up - because I remember that I am connected to the sky. The sky never ceases to remind me that all things pass, just like all days pass. Because tomorrow will bring with it a new sky, and a new day – and if I so desire, maybe a new me. And yet, it is also always the same sky – and the same me.

The sky is a part of my life. But I believe the sky is also a part of your life, too. It has been there ever since we were born, and it has been with us all the days of our lives. When we were happy, it was there. When we were sad, it was also there. When we were with our family or friends, it was there. When we were alone, it was also there. The sky never abandoned us. The sky never hides itself, or runs away – it is always there with us. The sky never stopped looking after us. It is always with us, every day, every moment, in the background of our lives. It is a part of all our lives – and, I believe, a part of all of us. And because I know now that the sky is a part of my life, I carry the sky inside me. And I believe that I am a richer person, and that my life is made richer, simply because I know that the sky is a part of me.
